South Satoya by Hanjiro Sakamoto (1882 - 1969)

Original Hanjiro Sakamoto (1882 - 1969) Japanese Woodblock Print
South Satoya
Series; Five Views of Aso, 1950

Hanjiro Sakamoto - Early in his career, the artist Hanjiro Sakamoto worked as a magazine illustrator. Through this association, he met Yamamoto Kanae and Isshi Tsuruzo, who were active in the sosaku hanga or creative prints movement. He began creating his own woodblock prints around 1909. After studying in Paris from 1921 - 1924, he returned to Japan and became well-respected for his Western-style paintings, and was honored by the Japanese government with the "Order of Cultural Merit" in 1956. Published in 1950 by Kato Junji, "Five Views of Aso" is considered his best woodblock print series. Sakamoto's prints have a very painterly quality with soft gradations of color and almost abstract shapes, giving them a dreamy feel. We rarely see prints by Sakamoto. His intriguing, somewhat mysterious designs are a great choice for a collector interested in modern Japanese woodblocks.
