Seki Sanjuro III as a Fireman, 1860
Series; Flowers of Edo, Excitement at Night
Seki Sanjuro III as a Fireman, 1860 - Terrific image Seki Sanjuro III as a fireman during a blaze, shielding his eyes with his hands as he scans the darkness, a lantern in his other hand. He has a quilted geometric print robe tied over a quilted jacket depicting a fierce dragon emerging from white-capped waves. A narrow sash is tied around his forehead. The silhouettes of figures carrying glowing lanterns are barely visible behind him. A great kabuki portrait with wonderful detail in the textiles. A hand-applied spattering of dark red pigment simulates embers flying through the night sky.
