Ichimura Kakitsu IV as a Fireman, 1860
Series; Flowers of Edo, Excitement at Night
Ichimura Kakitsu IV as a Fireman, 1860 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Ichimura Kakitsu IV as a fireman, hurrying through the night to fight a fire. He wears a beautiful quilted robe patterned with a colorful phoenix with long tail feathers over a black under garment, tied with a rust dotted sash. A blue and white cloth is knotted around his forehead, a few loose hairs blowing alongside his face. Behind him, men carry glowing lanterns through the darkness as ashes and embers blow over head. A great design with intricate detail in the quilting and a spattering of hand-applied red pigment to simulate the embers.
