Peony: Hanaogi of the Ogiya at Edo-machi Itchome

Selected Famous Works - Mainichi Shimbun Publisher

Mainichi Shimbun Publisher - From a fine collection of mid-20th century Utamaro reprints published by Mainichi Shimbun. This small Tokyo publisher carved blocks and reprinted many of the great masterwork designs of the Edo era. Their work was exquisite with an emphasis on quality, not quantity. Note the exceptional detail, carefully shaded printing, fine mica backgrounds, embossing, and other deluxe techniques. Mainichi prints are perfect for the collector or for the highest quality reprint for display.

Peony: Hanaogi of the Ogiya at Edo-machi Itchome - Lovely okubi-e or large head portrait of the beauty Hanaogi of the Ogiya contemplating writing a letter, the paper rolled up in her hand as she chews the end of her brush. Her hair is piled high atop her head, elegantly styled with combs and hairpins. A pink peony blossom frames the title cartouche at upper left. A beautiful okubi-e or large head format image, with a soft color palette and fine detail. Nicely detailed with embossing in the white patterns on pink and rose kimono. Rarely seen in reprint.

Artist - Utamaro (1750 - 1806)
Image Size - 15 1/4" x 10 1/4" + margins as shown
Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
