Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print
Lord Wake no Kiyomaro Receiving Oracles from the Deity at Usa Hachiman Shrine, 1881
Series; Twenty-four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan

Twenty-four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan - Yoshitoshi's late series "Twenty-four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan" highlights important figures throughout the history of Imperial Japan, from both legend and real life. These terrific images include valiant samurai, brave retainers, loyal wives, and fantastic demons. Beautifully drawn with a wonderful sense of realism and finely printed with rich jewel-tone colors, these designs are a great example of Yoshitoshi's mature artistic style. A great choice for a Yoshitoshi collector.

Lord Wake no Kiyomaro Receiving Oracles from the Deity at Usa Hachiman Shrine, 1881 - A loyal servant of three Japanese Emperors, Wake no Kiyomaru was highly trusted and known for his honesty. A dishonest priest of the Usa Hachiman Shrine in Kyushu approached the retired Empress Koken, saying that a deity told him that peace would reign throughout Japan if he were made Emperor. Suspicious, the Empress sent Wake no Kiyomaru to the shrine for his own prophecy. Contrary to the priest's contention, he learned that no commoners should sit on the throne and that troublemakers should be banished. This fantastic illustration by Yoshitoshi depicts the faithful Wake no Kiyomaru at the most important event in his career, receiving the Oracle from a true deity and preventing the priest's ascension to the throne. A fantastic depiction of this tale.
