Amaterasu Omikami Reappearing from the Cave, 1882 by Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print
Amaterasu Omikami Reappearing from the Cave, 1882
Series; Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan

Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan - Yoshitoshi designed this fantastic series of fifty-one prints of military heroes from 1876 to 1882. These dramatic images of famous warriors created a sensation with the Japanese public. Full of violence and intense emotions, Yoshitoshi's bold and innovative compositions tackled a historic subject using a modern style. His realism and drafting skill captured the important legacy of these national heroes at a time when Japan was struggling with the aftermath of the Satsuma Rebellion. Classic Yoshitoshi images, these dynamic prints are a great choice for collectors.

Amaterasu Omikami Reappearing from the Cave, 1882 - Handsome scene of the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu Omikami, reappearing from her hiding place in the mountains. Angered by her brother's actions, Amaterasu locked herself in a cave, plunging the world into darkness. Other gods and monks gathered around the entrance, with musicians performing to coax Amaterasu from her hiding place. When she heard all the noise, she came to the entrance, sending a glow of light across the landscape. With the cave open, the people could persuade her to come out and shine on the world again. A dramatic design with a deity in a white tunic pushing aside the door as the goddess stands with hands clasped before her, surrounded by the darkness of the rugged cave, the outer world filled with light and color. Fantastic detail in the goddess's flowing hair and the setting, with a dusting of mica around the mouth of the cave at right. A rarely seen design from this great series.
