Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
March: Gathering Shells, 1890
Series; Twelve Months of Customs and Manners in Edo
March: Gathering Shells, 1890 - Terrific scene of beauties and children at the seashore gathering clams. At left a woman looks up from her full basket, a blue and white cloth draped around her head to protect her hairstyle. Her kimono is tucked up and her sleeves are tied back with red sashes to keep them from getting wet. A couple watches from a stranded pleasure boat at right, waiting for the tide to return. The beach stretches out behind them, busy with people gathering shellfish in baskets and a man catching a fish with his bare hands. An attractive summer image, nicely detailed with fine line work, burnishing on the black kimono collars, and soft shading in the sea and sky. A lovely triptych with beautiful color and condition.
