Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Bando Shuka I as Shiraito of the Hashimotoya, 1852
Comments - Handsome portrait of Bando Shuka I as Shiraito of the Hashimotoya in the kabuki play "Sumidagawa Tsui no Kagamon." She is shown in an interior, smiling happily as she pushes up her sleeve, a tattoo just visible on her upper arm. She wears a purple and gray striped outer kimono trimmed with blue over a red and purple print under robe with a tie-dyed collar. Her hair is pulled back into a low knot, with a comb at the back, a few loose wisps framing her face. The wooden chest behind her holds ceramic containers, a small set of drawers and other objects, while the turtles decorate the panels above. A charming design with a nice setting, detailed with burnishing on the black collar and the black trim on the chest.
