Original Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882) Japanese Woodblock Print
Yoritomo Hiding in a Tree after the Battle of Ishibashi, 1866
Comments - Terrific triptych of the great general Minamoto no Yoritomo and his men hiding in a hollow tree following his defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama in 1180. Surrounded by enemy forces, his spy among the Taira, Kajiwara Kagetoki, diverts Yoritomo's pursuers away from the hiding place as he stands in the center, pointing in the opposite direction. At left, the Taira commander Oba Saburo (Kagechika) grimaces from astride his horse as he watches two birds flying through the night sky at upper left. A dramatic composition with large figures set off by the dark background. A great choice for a samurai enthusiast, beautifully detailed.
