Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Great Battle at the Ani River, 1860
Comments - Fantastic scene from the Battle at Ani River showing two warriors fighting on horseback. At right, a samurai wearing a battle helmet topped with deer horns and a coiled snake wheels on his horse to thrust a spear at his opponent. His adversary grips a sword over his head with blazing eyes as his horse rears. His hair blows wildly about his head and arrows piece his armor, with dark trickles of blood running down the plates. A row of spears faces him from a ring of enemies below, with a warrior struggling on his back beneath the horse's hooves. At left, another samurai gallops up on a gray mount, ready to assist his fellow warrior. The fighting continues in the background with troops in dark silhouette and gray smoke drifting across the night sky. A dramatic image with large, well-detailed figures.
