Takeshiuchi no Sukune [Kato Kiyomasa] Sails toward Korea, circa 1850 by Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Takeshiuchi no Sukune [Kato Kiyomasa] Sails toward Korea, circa 1850

Comments - Terrific image of the great warrior Kato Kiyomasa, here referred to as Takeshiuchi no Sukune to evade censorship, sailing to Korea. A distinguished leader, Kiyomasa was one of the three senior commanders during the Seven-Year War with Korea. He stands in the prow of his ship keeping a lookout as they approach land, his men sitting behind him in full armor, ready for battle. Waves crash against the side of the boat and banners flutter in the breeze. A fantastic samurai design with a bold composition and beautiful detail. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has this image in its collection.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)
Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 1/2" + margins as shown
Condition - This print with good color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Horizontal and vertical folds. Slight toning and creasing. Please see photos for details.
