Five Chivalrous Men, 1862 by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Five Chivalrous Men, 1862

Comments - Fantastic, complete five-panel kabuki print depicting actors as the five chivalrous men (gonin otoko). Dressed in matching blue summer cotton kimono, the men exchange wary glances. One takes a toothpick from his mouth while another pats the side of his face with a dotted towel. A border of softly shaded clouds separates the figures from a view of Ryogoku Bridge in dark silhouette against the night sky, crowded with people carrying glowing red lanterns. A terrific design, beautifully detailed with cloth embossing on the dotted towels, embossed lines on the folding fan, and softy bokashi shading in the clouds and sky. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan, Sawamura Tossho, Kawarazaki [?] , Ichimura Kakitsu, and Bando Shinsui. A terrific design, rare to find complete.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
Image Size - 14" x 47"
Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Five separate panels. Slight paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. Small hole, repaired. Slight soiling, a few small marks. Please see photos for details
