The Surrender of Aizu Castle by Meiji era artist (unsigned)

Japanese Woodblock Reprint
The Surrender of Aizu Castle

Comments - Dramatic depiction of the surrender of Aizu Castle during the Boshin War of 1868 - 1869 between samurai loyal to the shogunate and Imperial troops. At bottom center, Imperial troops scale the walls of the fortress, climbing ropes to reach the top. At left, fighting is already taking place inside, and an Imperial officer from Satsuma can be seen wearing the distinctive shaggy "black bear" wig. The battle continues at left, with wounded and dying members of the Aizu clan littering the ground. A fascinating historical image and the first time we have offered this subject in reprint.

Artist - Meiji era artist (unsigned)
Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28" + margins as shown
