Fuji Arts’ Winter Yoshitoshi Senso-e Exhibition
Report from Kagoshima: A View of the Two Heroes in Bloody Battle, 1877 - Dramatic scene of rebel leader Saigo Takamori grappling with Imperial Army officer Yasumura in the snow at Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion. Yasumura leans forward, grabbing Saigo by the wrist and elbow as the general struggles to free himself. At left, Beppu Shinsuke rushes forward to Saigo's rescue, hurrying past the fallen warriors heaped on the ground. At right, a soldier gallops past on horseback, swinging his sword, while he fighting continues in the distance at lower right. A dynamic image with wonderful detail in the expressive faces and an atmospheric night setting with a craggy pine tree framing the view. Detailed with extensive burnishing on the black uniforms and fine bokashi shading in the sky.
