The Prefect of Police Takes Food and Drink with Officers of the Military Forces, 1877
Fuji Arts’ Winter Yoshitoshi Senso-e Exhibition
The Prefect of Police Takes Food and Drink with Officers of the Military Forces, 1877 - Intriguing illustration of the prefect of police attending a party with military officers. In the center, a soldier tips back his head as he drinks from a straw-wrapped sake cask, the yellow wine gushing over his face. At beauty kneeling on the floor at right, recoils with laughter, covering her mouth with her hand. The men at right do not seem amused by his behavior, especially the nobleman in formal court dress sitting at a cloth-covered table. He frowns angrily, clenching a goblet of sake in his hand. A group of officers at left smile and relax as a woman serves them sake. A large gas chandelier with glass globes hangs overhead, and floral patterned carpet covers the floor. A fascinating subject, wonderfully detailed, including burnishing on the black jackets and the folding fan.
