News from Kagoshima: View of the Parting of Takamori and His Beloved Concubine, 1877 - Fascinating scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of Saigo Takamori's beloved concubine weeping as she parts from him, a tissue held to her eyes. Yoshitoshi has captured a fantastic range of expressions, from the sorrow on the beauty's face to the sympathetic glance of the seated rebel leader Saigo Takamori at far right, to the angry glare of the man seated in the center with his arms firmly folded across his chest. A terrific expressive image, skillfully drawn with rich deep color. Includes burnishing on the black jackets, boots, and the black areas of the rug. A rarely seen Yoshitoshi design.
