Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Yojibei, the Ship's Captain, Leaping from His Ship During a Storm, 1849 - 1852
Comments - Fantastic Kuniyoshi triptych showing a large ship foundering as it strikes a rock during a terrible storm at sea. Yojibei, the ship's captain, is shown at left leaping from his ship onto the rocky outcropping amidst the crashing waves. The ship begins to sink beneath the enormous swells, a smaller vessel alongside it likewise overwhelmed by the undulating waves. The sail billows out in the gusty wind, tiny figures below dwarfed by the white-capped peaks cresting over the railing. A dramatic image, beautifully composed and detailed. A rarely seen Kuniyoshi design.
