The Shining Prince Amusing Himself at the Seashore, 1858 by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Shining Prince Amusing Himself at the Seashore, 1858

Comments - Terrific scene of Prince Genji, the "Shining Prince," aboard a pleasure boat watching awabe or abalone divers. He grins happily as he holds a cup of sake, refreshments spread out on a tray behind him. At lower right, a diving woman uses a knife to pry a shell from a rock underwater as fish swim around her. At left, another beauty hands a shell up to a woman waiting in a boat with another diver who combs her long wet hair. Only the second time we've come across this wonderful design.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
Image Size - 14 1/2" x 29 5/8" + top margin as shown
Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. Losses at edges, a few holes, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and rubbing, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
