Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Prince Genji and Beauties, 1847 - 1852
Comments - Handsome illustration of Prince Genji and beauties in an elegant palace interior. He kneels on the floor in the center, wearing a kimono patterned with Genji symbols and grinning at the woman who carries a lantern at right. Beside him, a beauty looks over her shoulder with a shy smile, holding her sleeve against her chi. At left, a young girl carries in a black lacquer stand while the woman next to her holds a sword rack with a brocade-wrapped sword in it. The folding screen at upper right features a winter scene with a mandarin duck beneath a snow-covered blossoming plum tree. Wonderful detail in the fabrics and setting, including light embossing on the white kimono trim.
