Original Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Seven Gods of Good Fortune in the Treasure Boat Kakemono
Comments - Terrific vertical diptych or kakemono of the Seven Lucky Gods riding in their treasure boat, which features a fantastic prow in the form of a dragon clutching a sacred jewel. At lower right, Hotei leans one elbow over this side of the boat smiling happily. Daikoku sits beside him, resting his hands atop his magic mallet. Bishamonten stands at left, grimacing and clutching a pole arm, a narrow green sash fluttering around his head. The only female member of the group, Benzaiten, smiles serenely at upper right. A crane flies in front of the setting sun overhead, while below, a turtle with moss growing from its shell, a sign of longevity, floats on the crest of a wave. A great, rarely seen Hiroshige design.
