Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print
Prince Genji Dressed in the Edo Purple, 1866
Comments - Handsome scene of Prince Genji and his companions in an elegant room overlooking the water. The young nobleman sits on a cushion at right, pausing to look up with a smile as he writes a poem slip. At right, a beauty moves a lamp closer, while in the center, a woman chats animatedly with Genji. Another young woman peers around the edge of a folding screen decorated with blossoming cherry trees. At left, night fishermen are at work. Flames rise from the fire baskets hanging from the fronts of boats to attract fish to the surface, and large nets are ready for the catch. A rare, early Yoshitoshi triptych with wonderful detail. The first time we've seen this design.
