Original Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904) Japanese Woodblock Print
Captive Beauty, 1864
Comments - Rather gory kabuki scene of the beauty Otomi being held captive and tortured in a scene from the play commonly known as "Kirare Otomi." Otomi was the mistress of the gang boss Akama Genzaemon, and after he discovered that she had been unfaithful to him, he tortured her to get her to confess. Genzaemon stands at right with his sword in hand, grimacing angrily at the beauty. At left, a man sprawls on the floor with a bloody wound on his shoulder. Genzaemon's henchman, Yasuzo, who later becomes known as Yasu the Bat after he has a bat tattooed on his face, watches silently. The actors include Nakamura Kuzo as Yasuzo, Nakamura Kantaro as the sprawling man, Sawamura Tanosuke as Otomi, and Nakamura Shikan as Genzaemon.
