Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauty Eavesdropping, 1851
Comments - Great kabuki scene from the play "Genji Moyo Furisode Hinagata" of the beauty Jijo Sugibae eavesdropping behind an open door. She crouches on the porch at right, smiling happily as she hides her lantern beneath her sleeve, maples leaves drifting down through the night sky behind her. At left, Ashikaga Jiro no kimi stands just inside a doorway, shielding the light from a hanging lamp with his folding fan. His kimono is patterned with Genji crests, and his thick hair is pulled back into a topknot tied with a purple cord. The panels lining the room feature autumn grasses and blossoms. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII and Arashi Koroku V. A beautifully detailed design.
