Yokawa Kakuhan at Mt. Yoshino, 1882 by Toyonobu (1859 - 1886)

Original Toyonobu (1859 - 1886) Japanese Woodblock Print
Yokawa Kakuhan at Mt. Yoshino, 1882

Comments - Great scene from a famous episode from the life of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Facing an attack by warrior monks, Yoshitsune's brave retainer Sato Tadanobu disguised himself in his master's armor to allow him to escape. Here, the priest Yokawa Kakuhan crouches behind a tree, gripping a naginata with both hands as he creeps forward, a monk's mantle wrapped about his head. His black robe features a subtle burnished geometric pattern. Snow falls heavily over the scene, with the red temple building nestled among the tree trees. A great warrior portrait, beautifully detailed.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/8" + margins as shown
