Shono in Ise Province: Distant View of Shirashimazuka by Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)

Original Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Shono in Ise Province: Distant View of Shirashimazuka
Series; Calligraphy and Pictures for the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, 1872

Calligraphy and Pictures for the Fifty-three Stations - Terrific design from a Tokaido Road series pairing images with verses in calligraphy for the different stations. Different artists contributed designs, including Yoshitora and Kunisada II. The large pictures include landscapes, figures from history and legend, and scenes from kabuki plays and folktales. Several prints feature comic illustrations, including the adventures and mishaps of Kita and Yaji, the bumbling travelers from the popular novel "Shank's Mare." Others include travelers in Western attire or distinctly modern Meiji subjects. These imaginative prints are beautifully detailed with attractive color and fine line work, and offer an interesting Meiji era take on the classic Tokaido subject. A great choice for collectors interested in life along the Tokaido Road.

Shono in Ise Province: Distant View of Shirashimazuka - Interesting scene of two men in Western dress stopping to ask directions from a group of women working in the rice fields. The men wears long capes over pants and jackets, but each is armed with two swords in protective traveling cases. One woman points out the way as the others bend forward, planting small rice plants in the flooded bed. A porter waits patiently at right, balancing two small trunks tied to a pole over his shoulder, a Western style umbrella laid across the end. A circular inset at upper left shows a cuckoo swooping through the sky. A handsome design with fine shading in the water and sky.
