Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Cherry Blossom Viewing at Night
Comments - Wonderful triptych showing the Meiji Empress and the ladies of the palace viewing colorful pink cherry blossoms from a verandah at night. The Empress stands regally at left, holding a folding fan, her outer purple robe trailing onto the floor beside her. At upper right, two women kneel beside a table covered with refreshments. Red flames flicker in the many lamps covered with glass globes, providing illumination for the evening. An interesting spring scene with vibrant color and nice architectural detail in the setting. Includes burnishing on the black verandah railing and embossing on the white kimono collars.
