Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Commoners in Summer Kimono
Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych depicting a trio of commoners in front of a red and white checked curtain. Each wears a beautifully patterned, informal summer cotton kimono. The man at left tugs on the ends of a dotted towel over his shoulders, looking up with a frown. His robe features a rabbit leaping through autumn grasses. The commoner in the center emerges from beneath the curtain, grimacing menacingly, his hair cropped short, his kimono patterned with a snarling magic nine-tailed fox. The fellow at right wears a robe with a glowing full moon seen through fall grasses and leaves. From left to right, the actors are Kawarazaki Sansho, Onoe Kikugoro, and Sawamura Tossho. A great bold design with real graphic impact and wonderful detail.
