Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Confrontation at a Bridge, 1872
Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of a confrontation taking place between a nobleman and a samurai at the foot of a bridge. At left, the young samurai leans forward, tilting his chin up with a defiant frown as he holds his spear over his shoulder. The nobleman looks up into the sky, not returning his gaze. He wears and elegant black vest with a dragon over the shoulder, over a brocade robe and armor. At far right, another warrior regards the two men with a wary expression, while the man kneeling before him stares at him with a worried grimace. The arched wooden bridge fills the background, with buildings lining the opposite shore of the river. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tossho II as Oshio Kakunosuke, Bando Hikosaburo V as Oshio Heihachiro, Bando Taro, and Nakamura Jusaburo. Nice large expressive figures.
