Meiji Emperor and Empress Visiting a Railroad Station, 1881 by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Meiji Emperor and Empress Visiting a Railroad Station, 1881

Comments - Interesting scene of the Meiji Emperor and Empress paying a visit to a railroad station. In the center, two ladies-in-waiting lead the Empress by the hand as a third shelters her with an umbrella. The Emperor stands at left wearing a military uniform and plumed hat. A train can be seen on the tracks at upper right with an engineer looking out the window of the engine. A red floral carpet covers the floor and purple draperies overhead feature the Emperor's chrysanthemum crest. Beautifully detailed with burnishing on the black uniform and embossing on the white kimono collars.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)
Image Size - 14" x 29 1/2" + margins as shown
Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Horizontal and vertical folds. A few holes, repaired. Creasing, slight soiling, a few marks, small lightly rubbed spot. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
