Original Kunisada III (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Confrontation between Sumo Wrestlers
Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych depicting a confrontation between sumo wrestlers outside a temple. The sumo at right raises his fan angrily above his head as he glares at his rival, who tumbles backwards in the center, his hands thrown out in alarm. Between them, a man lifts a large stone marker with red characters on it above his head. He wears a yellow robe with black writing, his long hair falling loosely over her shoulders. A couple watches at left, the beauty looking on with an anxious expression. Blossoming cherry trees frame the blue sky overhead. An intriguing subject with lively color.
