Samurai Battling, 1870 by Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Samurai Battling, 1870

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of samurai battling, the warrior in the center raising his sword above his head with both hands as the other men clash blades. The warrior wears a striking helmet topped with a horned demon, and has a tiger skin scabbard hanging from his waist. The samurai at right grimaces angrily as he turns his head ahead, his long hair falling loosely over his shoulders. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji, Nakamura Shikan, and Sawamura Tossho. The large expressive figures are beautifully colored and detailed, set off by a deep blue night sky. Include embossing on the white headband at right and both white waist sashes. A dynamic design.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 1/8"
Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Slight soiling, faint crease at corner, a few small whitish spots. Please see photos for details.
