Sogo Goro Struggling with Goromaru, 1900
Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych from the tale of the Soga Brothers depicting the night attack on Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The young brothers waited years to avenge the death of their father at the hands of the nobleman Suketsune, who accompanied Yoritomo on his hunt. Here, hidden under a woman's kimono, Suketsune's retainer Goromaru sneaks up on Soga Goro, grabbing him around the waist. Goro grimaces at him with rage as he grips his sword in one hand. He wears a blue kimono patterned with his trademark butterflies over a suit of armor, his hair wet from the rain. Ichikawa Danjuro plays Soga Goro. A bold design with the plain background focusing all attention on the figures. Includes metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the blade of the sword.
