Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Crazed Beauty in a Boat, 1838
Comments - Fascinating kabuki scene of the rather crazed-looking beauty Oyanagi no Kata in a boat, staring at the water with a wide-eyed grin as she lifts her hat above her head. In the center, Torii Matsusuke pulls the craft toward the shore, a flaming torch in his other hand and the blade of a sword caught between his teeth. At left, a ninja shines a lantern on the pair, an alarmed expression on his face. The samurai Tatewaki wears a black coat and hood over a suit of armor and patterned pants. Willow branches frame the night sky as raindrops slant down over the river. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kuzo II, Sawamura Tossho I, and Iwai Shijaku I. An intriguing subject with expressive figures and a handsome natural setting.
