Moon of the Five Aspects, 1867 by Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print
Moon of the Five Aspects, 1867
Series; Snow, Moon, and Flowers with Valiant Warriors

Moon of the Five Aspects, 1867 - Terrific triptych of the warrior monk Benkei fighting with a group of tengu during his battle with Ushiwakamaru at Gojo Bridge. Winged spirits with bird-like beaks and claws or human faces with long noses, tengu are known for their fencing ability, and they trained the young Ushiwakamaru, who will become the master swordsman and samurai Yoshitsune. The tengu have come to the assistance of the boy samurai, who watches from the left as Benkei lunges forward with his spear, sending Ushiwakamaru's robe flying through the air. One of the tengu grabs the spear from below, attempting to wrench it away from the warrior, while another clings to his leg. A dynamic composition full of energy and movement, the figures standing out clearly against the dark night background. A fantastic scene from the life of this legendary Minamoto warrior.
