Original Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) and Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Series; Fashionable Genji
Akashi, 1853 - Fantastic triptych from a collaboration by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III depicting an updated Prince Genji in fashionable modern dress, rather than the clothing of the Heian era when the novel was written. Here, two beauties watch from a verandah as the young prince strolls through the autumn grasses at Akashi, accompanied by his sword bearer. The women smile, one of them gesturing as they look out over the landscape, a full moon glowing overhead. Ships are anchored near shore for the night, and a line of geese descends for the evening. A beautiful landscape view with attractive color and fine bokashi shading in the water and sky. Prints from this popular joint series are rarely seen in the market.
