Kimura Matazo and Shimado Goemon Dueling, 1893
Comments - Incredible scene of Kimura Matazo and Shimado Goemon dueling fiercely, battling each other with swords under the watchful eye of General Kato Kiyomasa on horseback at right. The samurai at left lunges ahead with his sword, while his opponent grips his own weapon above his head with both hands, drawing it back as he prepares to strike, a look of grim determination on his face. He wears a fine suit of armor over blue and white striped hakama pants, and a horned battle helmet. Behind them a stream runs through a grove of bamboo, rushing down to the shore at right, with mountains in soft silhouette in the distance. A terrific design with large, dramatic figures, beautifully drawn and detailed with burnishing on the armor and fine bokashi shading in the background.
