Transfer Ceremony at Ise Shrine by Sadahide (1807 - 1873)

Sadahide (1807 - 1873) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Transfer Ceremony at Ise Shrine

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the transfer ceremony at Ise Shrine to move sacred treasures from the old building to the new one. Every twenty years, the shrine buildings are reconstructed as part of the Shinto belief in the impermanence of all things and the death and renewal of nature. A procession of priests and noblemen passes solemnly through the gateways, unrolling a white cloth for the Emperor, who is shielded from view by cloth awnings at the rear of the procession. Clouds drift overhead, and the famous Wedded Rocks are visible in the sea beyond. A wonderful image detailing this sacred ceremony, beautifully detailed and composed. A beautifully printed design from a small group of Taisho era reprints by Otsukakogeisha Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, which began publishing in 1919.

Artist - Sadahide (1807 - 1873)
Image Size - 14 1/2" x 29 1/8" + margins as shown
Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Light diagonal crease at each corner from original publisher mounting. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
