Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Comments - Dramatic scene of a geese watching party in a palace on the island of Sarujima. At right, the nobleman Taira no Masakado shoots down a pair of geese with a glance, a demonstration of his incredible power at his peak. He stands erect in his formal robe, glaring straight ahead into the evening sky as two birds fall towards the sea. In the center, his guest Fujiwara no Hidekuni frowns as he watches, a fan in hand, while several of the ladies-in-waiting and the noblemen on the distant verandah react with surprise. A lovely natural setting with moonlight shimmering on the water and low mountains along the horizon beneath a glowing full moon. Beautifully detailed with fine bokashi shading in the water and sky, burnishing on the black robes and caps, and embossing on the white kimono. A striking subject.
