Raiko Slaying the Demon Shuten-doji at Oeyama, 1849 - 1852 by Kunimasa II (1792 - 1857)

Original Kunimasa II (1792 - 1857) Japanese Woodblock Print
Raiko Slaying the Demon Shuten-doji at Oeyama, 1849 - 1852

Comments - Fantastic triptych from the legendary tale of the Demon of Oeyama, the horrible Shuten-doji, who kidnapped young beauties and held them hostage in his lair on Mt. Oe near Kyoto. The great warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko) and his men traveled to the demon's hideout in order to kill him. After lulling him into a drunken stupor, attacks the sleeping monster, cutting off its head with his sword. The horned demon's head flies through the air, floating above the hero. Raiko's men battle Shuten-doji's minions, grappling with the red- and blue-faced goblins. Shafts of light radiate from a deity floating on a cloud at upper right, sending divine assistance to the brave samurai. Panicked beauties flee at left. An incredible scene from this great legend, with wonderful detail in the expressive faces and armor and an atmospheric setting. A great choice for a samurai enthusiast.
