Kokusen'ya Gassen Kabuki Paper Model Set
Paper Model Sets - Fuji Arts is pleased to offer a terrific group of complete and uncut paper model sets. These entertaining 19th century prints were designed to be cut apart and formed into three-dimensional models. An inset cartouche provides an example of the finished scene once assembled. Using the scene as a guide, the model builder could cut out the different components of the scene from the prints and create the model. Sets usually include a variety of figures, accessories, and background elements, brightly colored and nicely detailed, with subjects ranging from kabuki plays to famous samurai battles.
Not many complete sets survive. Collectors are lucky to own a single print from a model set - a complete paper model scene is an almost unprecedented opportunity. These are incredibly rare pieces and would make a terrific addition to any collection. Take advantage of this great opportunity before it passes you by - bid now!
Comments - Handsome, complete five panel paper model set from the kabuki drama "Kokusen'ya Gassen," the story of the warrior Watonai traveling to China to help restore the Ming Dynasty. He asked his half-sister, Kinshojo, to plead his case with her husband, General Kanki. The scene shows Watonai in the center, holding a flaming torch as he waits for a signal from Kinshojo. She was to release into the river either white pigment signaling success for his plan or red pigment indicating failure. However, instead of red pigment, the red comes from her own blood, unbeknownst to anyone else. She kneels in the tower at right, pouring the blood from a shallow silver bowl, dressed in elegant robes trimmed with rows of colorful ruffles. Kanki watches solemnly from the left tower. A fantastic design with a very detailed and extensive setting, including the stone bridge with the water running red beneath it, and the two high stone towers of the castle. A terrific uncut paper model set from this popular play.
