Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sakata Kintoki Lodges in the Chambers of Minamoto no Raiko to Capture the Monstrous Spider, 1886
Series; Sketches by Yoshitoshi
Sketches by Yoshitoshi - Yoshitoshi designed this fascinating series of sketches in 1882, taking classic subjects from Japanese folklore and history and presenting them in a comic style. The artist creates an amusing twist on scenes from famous tales and kabuki plays, such as bats recreating a scene from the Chushingura, to humorous images from daily life, like three women laughing and falling to the ground when trying to pull up pine shoots to ensure good luck in the New Year. Like his full size woodblocks, these designs are carefully drawn and printed with the same attention to detail. These witty prints offer a great opportunity to collect an original Yoshitoshi at a great price.
Sakata Kintoki Lodges in the Chambers of Minamoto no Raiko to Capture the Monstrous Spider, 1886 - Terrific diptych design from the tale of the tsuchigumo or earth spider which tormented the warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu, also known as Raiko, while he was ill. Here, his loyal retainer Sakata Kintoki sleeps in his master's chamber to kill the giant spider during the night. He reclines on the floor, slumped over a go board, his sword beside him. At right, the earth spider, in the form of a beautiful woman, casts a web over the room, the silk threads radiating from her body and extending across the room. The ghostly figure hovers in the air, crouching forward with her hair swinging around her face. A shaft of light from the lamp at left glows in the dark gray room. A great depiction of this famous supernatural story, detailed with embossing on the beauty's white kimono collar.
