Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Seals from Matsumae
Series; Celebrated Products of Mountains and Seas, 1852
Seals from Matsumae - Attractive portrait of a beauty holding a plectrum, a pick used to play the shamisen, on top of a roll of tissues. She smiles as she looks over her shoulder, the tip of her tongue caught between her teeth. She wears a violet kimono over a red under robe, tied with a blue green brocade obi, her other hand resting atop the handle of a shamisen. The inset above indigenous people hunting for seal from a boat. One of the furry creatures bobs above the surface while another dives into the water. Nicely detailed with embossing on the white kimono collar. A rarely seen series. We've never come across this subject before.
