Evening Glow at Awazu
Series; Military Brilliance for the Eight Views, 1852
Evening Glow at Awazu - Terrific portrait of the woman warrior Tomoe Gozen after the Battle of Awazugahara. During the battle, Tomoe fought bravely alongside her husband, Minamoto no Yoshinaka, who was defeated and killed there. She is shown astride her horse, looking up with a slightly worried expression. She wears a fine suit of armor and carries a naginata, two arrows piercing her shoulder plates. Her long hair is tied back with a white sash around her forehead, a few loose wisps framing her face. A faint rosy glow spreads along the horizon as evening begins to fall, pine trees silhouetted in gray along the hill behind her. A great design, beautifully composed and detailed.
